Objective of the Competition: to create a design project for a family guesthouse of 40 square meters to be implemented in Yasno Pole Ecopark. Each student had to solve a range of teaching and educational tasks. First of all, the students studied the world of modern architecture and art, relevant to the given topic – small houses and small objects. Students were acquainted with the masters who have worked on similar projects, which partly assisted then in the adoption of certain solutions in their own works. In parallel with the project, the students also completed artistic tasks. Each work has its own “Picture”, which combines the prospective cross-section and artistic interpretation, linked to the master that the student selected.

The short-list included five projects:

Maria Pakhomova, “Ray”

The “Ray” House has a neat appearance, does not violate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. A large stained glass window, passing through the house, connects the inner and outer spaces, combining architectural composition into a whole. The house is designed for the comfortable stay of six people, but can accommodate even eight when necessary.

1st floor – rest area and place for group activities.

2nd floor – the attic – in which is located the sleeping area.

The window above the sleeping area is oriented to towards the east, so that people can wake up with the first rays of the sun, while the window over the seating area faces west, allowing guests to enjoy the sunset. The general design is a wedge shape, emphasizing the shape of the house. These houses are “strung” along hiking trails that lead to the common area on the north side and diverge into individual trail access points to the south. The figurative name “Ray” was inspired by the night view of the main facade of the building.

Elina Paramonova, the project “Focus”

A house for four people on a plain covered with trees, with views over the hilly landscape of Yasno Pole. The archetypal form of the house, which is repeated several times to form a complex – the “tapes” of several of these are built into a square, and thus constitute a single structure. The effect of the general design of wholeness is achieved through the use of the same material on the terraces, the facades and the roofs (planed boards). Some homes have bright accents. From the outside of the complex facades are made of stained glass mirrors – helping the complex dissolve into the surrounding landscape.

The first and second floors are united with a two-tier window space.

The heart of the house – is a wooden frame on a screw-pile foundation. The interior walls are covered with decking (15 x 2000 mm) and lacquered to protect against external influences. The first level fulfills the functions of storage, recreation, socializing, and eating, the second – sleeping and privacy. Leading to the second floor is a staircase encased in a wooden “cage”, situated between the two entrances to the house. The two long sides of the façades of this house are flanked by “morning” and “evening” terraces.

Vlad Karabaev, the project “Crown”

Houses on stilts, symbolizing the thicket. The orientation of the house affects the amount and location of the window openings. The only window on the eastern facade – forms an image of the first rays of the sun penetrating the “crown” of trees. Most of the windows are located on the south and south-west sides for the best exposure to the sun and to create shadow play – enlivening the interior. The working area or eating area is in the northern part of the house, and has an all-glass facade, overlooking a panorama of fields. The sleeping area is expected to be located in the central part of the house, above the rest area.

Daniil Kuzyakov, project “Affect”. Affect is the opposite of the peaceful spirit, evoking the feelings of suspense or difficulty in the ordinary course of normal representations.

Its external appearance will torment the eyes of a person accustomed to the rational, and surprises by its shapes and unconventionality. Staying in this house, you will experience troubles, “And what is this?” You will not find in it any historical masks; each part of the house will affect you its own way. One turns, dazzles, weeps under curved beams; the central part of the house beckons with its openness, the third part is smooth, hard, and impenetrable, like a fortress. One cannot experience just one feeling in this house, it is alive and, like all living things, behaves differently, then subsides, and then glows, emanating from it the fountain of human emotions that are in it! Architecture must be ablaze!

Alexandra Aslanian – guest house Polaroid, resembling the eponymous camera. The main feature of the opening of the camera body is a massive pop-up flash. In this way, the project has found expression in two different volumes, set on each other with an offset of a certain length. The smaller of the volumes – the very same “flash” is not a residential part of the house; it houses a staircase and a storage system.

The whole house is trimmed with wooden boards, and on the perimeter, in a specific order, are placed false supports, emphasizing similarities with the camera.
